AMAMI MUD-DYED JACQUARD
"Amami Mud Dyeing" is an ancient dyeing technique that has been rooted in Amami Oshima for centuries. Though the exact origins are unclear, there are records from around 1300 years ago during the Nara period of brown fabrics being offered as tribute from the southern regions. Amami Mud Dyeing involves using a decoction from Teachi trees (car wheel plum), aged 10 to 30 years, and repeatedly dyeing in mudfields rich in iron, dating back 1.5 million years. This natural dyeing method, relying solely on Amami Oshima’s nature, creates soft, deep, and rich colors that cannot be replicated with chemical dyes. The base fabric is inspired by Japanese "Boro" patchwork and expressed through jacquard weaving, using thick yarns and various weaving techniques to represent patchwork. The nature of Amami Oshima and the long-preserved history of its people are woven into this fabric. This truly is a gift from nature, nurturing the spirit of the earth.
