This is original denim that faithfully reproduces the traditional Japanese color, “Futa-ai.” The warp threads are dyed using a combination of natural indigo and madder, resulting in a deep and nuanced purple. The natural unevenness of the dye enhances the denim’s distinctive texture.
Both the warp and weft threads use 6-count uneven slub yarn, giving the fabric a rich and weighty feel. The denim, dyed in “Futa-ai,” conveys a unique presence that blends quiet elegance with strength.
The silhouette is a regular straight fit.
FUTA-AI DENIM (二藍）
“Futa-ai” is a shade of purple created by layering indigo and safflower dyes. This color has existed since the Heian period and was especially used in the garments of the aristocracy. At the time, purple was considered a noble color in the rank-based system and was a restricted color permitted only to those of high status.
“Futa-ai” is known for its subtle hue, which blends the depth of indigo with the vibrance of safflower. The Japanese people have long cherished the beauty of such delicate colors and incorporated them into their clothing. At Studio D’Artisan, we’ve recreated this traditional Japanese color and developed our own original denim. The warp threads are dyed by layering natural indigo and madder, resulting in a rich, deep purple.
Using traditional power looms in Ibara City, Okayama Prefecture, the fabric is slowly and carefully woven to create a unique texture. Since ancient times, the Japanese have embraced a wide range of colors inspired by the changing seasons, finding beauty in these subtle transitions. This denim, dyed in “Futa-ai,” embodies calmness, elegance, and strength—offering a truly one-of-a-kind presence.
