These jackets are crafted using our original Kasuri Dye Beach Cloth. The fabric’s surface features kasuri-dyed warp threads, creating broken lines that resemble pouring rain. The inside is lined with wool fleece, making it a warm, double-layered construction. All seams and edges are finished with piping for a clean and durable look.
KASURI DYE BEACH CLOTH
This fabric was originally developed in the early 1900s for workers in the harsh, cold regions of the U.S. East Coast. By twisting together two different colored yarns, the surface gains a random, textured look with mixed tones—this speckled appearance is what gave rise to the nickname "Goma-Shio" (literally “sesame salt”).
Thanks to its excellent warmth and durability, it became a staple for workers in tough environments like hunting and forestry. There's also a story that surfers at the time wore it to stay warm on the beach, which is how it came to be called “Beach Cloth.”
From the 1920s to 1930s, the fabric spread across the U.S. and was loved by workers and outdoor enthusiasts alike. At Studio D’Artisan, we’ve reimagined this classic American textile by combining it with kasuri—a traditional Japanese weaving technique often used in everyday kimono. The result is our original “Kasuri Dye Beach Cloth.”
On the surface, we’ve used kasuri-dyed warp threads to create broken, irregular lines that resemble falling rain. The inner layer is made with wool fleece, forming a dual-layered structure that offers excellent insulation. This fabric brings together the rustic charm of Japanese nature-inspired design with the hard-wearing functionality of American workwear—blending warmth, texture, and character into something truly unique.
