This denim is dyed using the traditional “Awa Sho-Ai” method that Japan takes pride in. Since dark colors cannot be achieved in one go, artisans repeat the steps of dyeing, squeezing, and drying many times. Through this meticulous process, a rich and deep tone gradually emerges.
For the weft yarns, hand-dyed kakishibu threads are used. These hand-dyed yarns are thicker than machine-dyed ones and have a unique texture, giving the fabric an irregular, expressive surface that stands apart from ordinary 15oz denim.
Enjoy the extraordinary fading and texture that only this denim can provide.
The silhouette is a regular straight cut.
AWA SHOAI KAKISHIBU
This denim is dyed using “Awa Sho-Ai,” a traditional Japanese indigo dyeing method that Japan proudly shares with the world. The indigo used comes from Tokushima Prefecture and is known as “Awa Ai,” a dyeing tradition that dates back to the Edo period. The dyeing process uses a unique fermentation technique, which doesn’t just create a simple blue but brings out a wide range of deep tones—such as blue-indigo, red-indigo, purple-indigo, and black-indigo.
Because dark colors cannot be achieved in a single round, artisans repeat the steps of “dyeing,” “squeezing,” and “drying” many times. Through this careful process, the color gradually gains depth and transforms beautifully over time. The true character of “Awa Sho-Ai” becomes most visible after about 30 washes. The excess dye and impurities are washed away, revealing a deep, harmonious color.
This traditional indigo dye also has a distinctive scent believed to repel insects, which is why it has long been used for clothing and bedding. As you wear the fabric, the fragrance changes subtly, eventually bringing a calming, comforting effect.
For the weft yarns, hand-dyed kakishibu (fermented persimmon) threads are used. This technique, also called “sun dyeing,” involves exposing the threads to sunlight and wind, causing them to oxidize and naturally darken over time. Compared to machine-dyed yarns, these hand-dyed threads are thicker and more textured, resulting in a unique uneven finish that sets it apart from typical 15oz denim.
The interplay of the Awa indigo in the warp and the kakishibu-dyed weft yarns creates a deep, natural beauty that feels in harmony with the environment. The rich, captivating tones produced by this process showcase the one-of-a-kind expression made possible by Awa Sho-Ai dyeing. This is the ultimate expression of “Japanese denim,” born from time-honored craftsmanship. We invite you to fully enjoy the intense fading and exceptional texture that only this denim can offer.
