Studio D'Artisan uses the ancient Amami mud dyeing technique to create indigo mud-dyed garments. This involves layering mud dye over indigo-dyed fabric. The combination of indigo and Amami mud deepens the color towards black, adding depth with blue and brown hues. Crafted with passion and care by skilled artisans, this sweatshirt reflects the natural beauty and rich history of Amami Oshima. It is a gift from Mother Earth.
AMAMI DOROZOME x INDIGO
Amami Dorozome (mud dyeing) is an ancient dyeing technique rooted in Amami Oshima. Although detailed records of its origin are scarce, it is noted in historical texts that brown pongee was presented from the southern regions to Todaiji Temple and the Shosoin Repository in Nara over 1300 years ago. This technique involves dyeing with the juice of Techi trees (grown for 10-30 years) and repeatedly immersing the fabric in iron-rich mud fields influenced by ancient geological layers.
Amami Dorozome, which uses only natural resources from Amami Oshima, results in gentle, deep, and rich colors unattainable with synthetic dyes. This time, Dal Chizan has created denim using this traditional method, combining indigo and mud dyeing. The process layers mud dye over indigo-dyed denim, deepening the color towards black. The unique blend of blue and brown hues gives the black a sense of depth.
This beautifully crafted denim, made with the passionate hands of skilled artisans, embodies the nature and history of Amami Oshima. It is a gift from Mother Earth, enriched by the ancient traditions of the island.
