This shirts is made using the original "Kakishibu-dyed Noragi Sashiko" fabric. By adjusting the Kakishibu dyeing process and number of dyeings, we created three colors of Kakishibu-dyed thread to express a checkered pattern. The Sashiko pattern running vertically and horizontally is inspired by the traditional Japanese "Kaki no Ha" (persimmon leaf) design. The jacket is washed at a high temperature, using the difference in shrinkage between the thread count and fabric material to give it a hand-stitched, slightly raised texture. The buttons are made of nut buttons.
KAKISHIBU NORAGI SASHIKO
In the past, when the everyday attire of Japanese people was traditional clothing, cotton garments were highly precious. They were essential for survival, helping to protect against the cold and providing relief from the heat. Even when kimonos were worn out and frayed, people carefully patched and mended the fabric, continuing to wear it with great care. This culture of never wasting clothes and reusing them repeatedly gave birth to unique, beautiful patterns and the warmth characteristic of hand-stitched Sashiko. For this piece, Studio D'Artisan has expressed Japan's traditional "Noragi Sashiko" using Kakishibu-dyed thread. By adjusting the concentration and number of dyeing processes, we created three different colors of Kakishibu-dyed thread. These threads are woven together to create a deep, checkered pattern. Additionally, the Sashiko stitching features the traditional Japanese "Kaki no Ha" (persimmon leaf) pattern. Reconstructed with the craftsmanship, knowledge, and pride of modern artisans, we have reimagined the "Noragi" workwear of old Japan. This results in a unique and unmatched piece: the "Kakishibu Noragi Sashiko." Feel the deep texture and warmth it offers.
